Language And Literacy with Zoo Phonics
During a child's first five years, language develops from babbling sounds to an emerging reader. We are aware of the many steps in this process and stress the mastery of each, before a new step is undertaken. Our Two's are encouraged to speak to their peers and teachers. Our Three's are encouraged to listen to stories and books. Our Four's are encouraged to converse in detail. Our Young Five's are encouraged to tell and write their own stories, as well as read their first words. At every level of this development, we incorporate the Zoo Phonics Curriculum to aid the children in their preparation for Kindergarten.
Every day our students are exposed to mathematical concepts that are the foundation for future success in addition, subtraction and beyond. Age appropriate numbering, patterning, matching shapes, proportions, spatial relationships and one to one correspondence are just a few of the concepts our teachers incorporate into every day activities such as calendar, fingerplays and songs.
Everything the children touch, hear, taste, see and smell can become a science experiment. Children of all ages and stages are natural scientists. We supply the tools and they supply the questions!
The world is an intriguing place that fascinates all children. People from other lands, places, cultures, customs and traditions are explored in a variety of classroom experiences. Literature, music, the sharing of family traditions and the dramatic arts help to bring a little bit of the world around us to life in the classroom.
On a daily basis our teachers provide creative opportunities with a wide array of media for each of the children to try. It is easy to admire what the children are learning during the school day, by the ever-changing art displayed on the walls!
Music provides the children with the opportunity to play and move in a meaningful way. Movin' and Groovin' to various rhythms, acting out mini musical plays, singing about our Zoo Phonics friends and creating their own percussion beat encourages the growth of each child's musical gifts. Nursery rhymes, folk songs, echo songs and traditional Holiday songs take us merrily through the school year.
Large Motor Skills
Gross motor skills are movements which use the large muscles in the body. Developing these large motor skills is an important key to the success of a preschool child. Here at the Learning Tree we incorporate movement within our class music time, utilize our gyms and great play areas such as the Ace Place and Imagination Station. Children have many opportunities to explore equipment such as; balls of various sizes, balance beams, mats, hoops, scooters and obstacle courses.
Specials - Art, Music and Gym
Each week, on a rotating basis, your child's class will have a visiting "Specials" teacher focus on Art, Music and Gym. This focus will be in addition to the above descriptions which will further enrich and compliment your child's overall preschool experience.
